The aim of test and tagging is to determine if an appliance is electrically safe for use. Test and Tag is a generic name given to the process of visually inspecting and then electrically testing portable electrical appliances for safe use. Test and Tag is also referred to as; test & tagging, test tag, electrical tagging, portable appliance testing and electrical appliance testing.

Each appliance undergoes a visual inspection for defects such as damage or missing components, then a number of electrical tests to measure continuity, insulation resistance, leakage and polarity. Any appliances identified as non-compliant (FAILED) should be taken out of service immediately for repair or replacement.
